21 Day Vegan Kickstart Roundup

So far 2014 is truly a year of veganism. Google Trends reveals that global interest in vegan-related information is at an all-time high. With Beyonce and Jay taking the 22 day vegan challenge, more and more celebrities and lay people are answering the call of health, of compassion, and of sustainability. Beyonce and Jay’s health coach, Marco Borges, is also a celebrity coach for the “21 Day Vegan Kickstart.”
The 21 Day Vegan Kickstart is a free on-line healthy eating program created by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). It is designed to provide step-by-step instructions for people to transition into a healthier dietary habit. The program is perfect for people who have health conditions that they would like to improve, or for those who simply want to stay healthy or lose a little weight. If you want to go vegan but don’t know how to start, or how to ensure that a vegan diet is nutritionally adequate, or if you would like to try this way of eating to see if it may reap health benefits, the 21 Day Vegan Kickstart is for you.
Hong Kong is already a metropolis with a growing vegetarian influence. Buddhists eat plant-based fare on the first and 15th days of each lunar month. In October 2013, the first annual Vegfest took place, attracting more than 4000 enthusiastic attendees.
In March, PCRM collaborated with The Hong Kong Vegan Society, The Hong Kong Vegetarian Association, Club O, and VeggieMountain to introduce Vegan Kickstart to Hong Kong. The program is named the “Hong Kong 21 Day Healthy Challenge.” The kickoff event took place on March 1st at Duke of Windsor Social Service Building in Wanchai. Celebrity coaches Jackie Lui and Mak Jiing graced the event, attracting the attention of various media organisations, among them ECSTV, HK Satellite TV, etc.
Jackie Lui said, “Veganism is a new attitude towards life, a new personal taste, and a new way of living.”
21 Day Healthy Challenge features a delicious, nutritionally balanced 21-day vegan menu. Participants, after providing their email address upon registration, will be able to receive daily messages that include recipes, nutrition and cooking webcasts, nutrition tips, and words of inspiration from the more than 20 celebrities who power their productive life with plant-based fuel.
After the kickoff event, many people expressed that they would like to turn to a more plant-based diet and went on to register for the 21 Day Healthy Challenge online program. With the unconditional support from Hong Kong NGOs, participants are able to join weekly local meetings with fellow participants or veteran vegans.
“Through face-to-face interactions, new vegan friends will be able to quickly absorb the knowledge they need to stay healthy on their exciting vegan voyage,” said Dr Vincent Lee, president of Hong Kong Vegetarian Association. “We are planning to do another such local on-the-ground event this coming July.”
Hong Kong 21 Day Healthy Challenge is an opportunity for vegans and meat eaters alike to experience a scientifically proven healthy diet that may reverse heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers.
Those who would like to give it a try may register for free at 21dayhealthychallenge.org.
